about
  • fijuu is a 3D, audio/visual installation. Using a PlayStation-style gamepad, the player(s) of fijuu dynamically manipulate 3D instruments to make improvised music. fijuu is built using the open source rendering engine OGRE and runs on Linux. in the future fijuu will be released as a Linux live CD project, so players can simply boot up their PC with a compatible gamepad plugged in, and play without installing anything (regardless of operating system). This effectively turns the domestic PC into a console for game based audio performances.

  • See the project outline for a quick overview of Fijuu2.

    synchronicity

Fijuu2 is on the road at a few locations this month: Bzoom Festival in Brno, Czech Republic (09-15.10.06), Mediaterra in Athens (02-10.10.06) and at the Artful Gaming event (02-10.10.06), as part of the London Games Festival, U.K.

astute readers will notice that the date overlap across these shows: pix took the shuttle up to Brno where it's on display now and Alex of Mediaterra installed Fijuu2 on an Ubuntu box they set up there. while Fijuu2 was well received, it experienced a strange shader glitch on an ATI x1300 card which rendered non-active tracks invisible (eek).this made it tricky for people to develop their compositions visually. i'll make sure that card and driver version is noted as scary in the README.

i guess this is why we have a dedicated installation machine!

    fijuu2 video uploaded

Cybersonica was a real treat. thanks a ton to all involved and also to those that were kind enough to write about our project in your blogs/journals. there was some incredible work both up and downstairs at Phonica (i'm still getting over Philip Worthington's 'Shadow Monsters' for instance)

while there are quite a few snaps of fijuu2 around online, there aren't many videos floating about. for this reason i've cut together a 4 minute clip in Cinelerra from a much longer session jamming with a few of the instruments. if you want to see the other instruments you'll just have to play with fijuu2 yourself!

    get the video here.

the 40M clip is in the Ogg Theora format. if you don't know what that means, just use the VLC player, freely downloadable for Linux, Windows and Macintosh here.

it's perhaps worth mentioning this is by no means a showreel, that's coming later when we have better video data to work with.

pix is in Bradford installing fijuu2 at the b.TWEEN conference. try and catch him there if you're in the area.

    enjoy!
