about
  • fijuu is a 3D, audio/visual installation. Using a PlayStation-style gamepad, the player(s) of fijuu dynamically manipulate 3D instruments to make improvised music. fijuu is built using the open source rendering engine OGRE and runs on Linux. in the future fijuu will be released as a Linux live CD project, so players can simply boot up their PC with a compatible gamepad plugged in, and play without installing anything (regardless of operating system). This effectively turns the domestic PC into a console for game based audio performances.

    new version for Cybersonica 06!

well, this whole site could really use a bit of a clean-up, but if you'll excuse the mess, i have an important announcement:

after months of talking about it, the elusive next version of fijuu has finally materialised.

    check out the screenshots!.

fijuu2, (affectionately known as fijuuu!), was commissioned for Cybersonica 06. as a part of the commission, it will be presented at several festivals throughout the UK in the coming month. check the Cybersonica site for more details, but first stop is:

Cybersonica and Encompass Sonic Art Exhibition @ Phonica Records, 51 Poland St, Soho, London W1F 7NG, Monday, 8th - Saturday, 20th May 2006, 11.30am-7.30pm, Mon-Wed, 11.30am-8pm, Thurs-Sat. The exhibition is FREE and no booking is required.

julian is in london for the installation now, and i plan to be at the b.TWEEN festival, in Bradford UK, if anyone would like to have a chat ;).

this version of fijuu was once again developed using open-source software. we would especially like to thank the developers and maintainers of the following projects: OGRE 3D, blender, gimp, inkscape, pure-data, vim, the linux kernel, the debian distribution, and of course the gnu projects of which there are too many to mention.

enough talk already, show me the code!

firstly, belated apologies for not getting around to publically releasing the sourcecode to the old fijuu. it was a mess and i didn't feel right about unleashing it on an unsuspecting public. we had that experience firmly in our minds during the recent redevelopment, so we think it's clean enough to link to here.

one disclaimer remains though. our main installation target at the moment is the specific machine which is travelling with fijuu2 on the tour (also funded by the generous Cybersonica commission). the sourcecode is provided for people that would like to see the inner workings of an open-source installation. having said that, you can always check the readme to see if you have what you need to run it.

the easiest option for most people is to grab the source tarball here: fijuu-2.0.tar.gz.

if you have darcs you can get a copy of our repository with this command:

    darcs pull http://fijuu.com/darcs

if you have problems, drop us an email. or better yet, send me a darcs patch ;)
